Beef Tallow giveaway

You probably never thought when you came to our blog, to see a post about a beef tallow giveaway. I never thought that I would be writing a post about a giveaway like this. But I am. Here's the goods: There is a giveaway over at Kelly the Kitchen Kop's site for a 36lb bucket of beef tallow. Now that you think I'm crazy... this is what one would use beef tallow for... For frying french fries (everyone who trys it says that it is sooo good), instead of butter in your pie crust... AnnMarie says it makes the best crust ever.... And how about frying onion rings and chicken tenders in it. Another plus, it's good for you fat. So hurry over and enter. It ends at 11:59pm tonight.

17 years ago today

On this very day, seventeen years ago, Vern took me to the top of Pike’s Peak near Colorado Springs, Colorado, where I lived. We ate donuts at 14,000 feet plus and walked around looking down and marveling and how teeny tiny everything was from this height. Then he popped the question. I can’t remember exactly how he asked, but I do remember gasping and quietly shrieking, “Yes!” even though I had a pretty good idea that this was coming. He told me he had intended to get down on his knee, but… and then he looked at the ground around us… there are an awful lot of sharp little rocks!

Since then, we joke that he asked me to ‘be his wife for the rest of his life’ on ‘the top of the world’.

Today we are sneaking away to have almost a weekend together. We won’t be far from home, in case they need us for something with James, but we’ll be alone. We are really looking forward to the time together.

I have this feeling we’ll sleep a lot!

Extended stay

Early this morning, James spiked another fever. I don't remember the numbers. The concern is that he may have a staph type infection. So sometime soon, someone will come up to try to get James an IV so we can give him vancomycin which is a good antibiotic to use against staph.

It is still possible that things could clear up enough that we could take James home this weekend. If that happens, we could take home an oral antibiotic to complement the vancomycin. However, we may determine it is best to stay here through the weekend and go ahead and remove his port early next week.

It just depends.

Vern stayed at the Ronald McDonald house last night and is here with us today. While he is here, Katie and I may take a break and go out to do some things. We are still deciding how to handle the days coming up.

Please pray for wisdom for us and for James, as he goes through another IV stick and fights whatever it is. On the up side, his counts are all good and we seem to have caught this early.

Today I unintentionally viewed our profile and I noticed that nearly 81 people have viewed it (I'm sure there have been duplicates) . Wow! I know that's not much in the blogosphere, but it seems like a lot to me!

My guess is that not all of you who read here have read the profile and that most of you are (gasp) lurkers! :*).. It's really okay. I lurked for a long time before I ever commented on a blog. At the time, I felt like I didn't express myself very well in such a limited space, so I lurked for a while longer before I commented again. There are still blogs that encourage me and I don't feel I have anything to offer, so I just lurk even now.

I feel a little more free to comment now that I have a blog--if people are interested, they can learn more about the strange person who commented on their blog and get a better picture. I also realize now how encouraging it is to blog and have folks comment.

So far, I haven't been very good at responding to comments. I am trying to remedy that. I am hoping that James' journey with leukemia will get a little less bumpy (no guarantees) and that we'll be able to focus on some other kinds of posts--like homesteading, thoughts on the Christian life, our family... I would also like to find a way to list an e-mail address without worrying about spam--we already get enough!

My request to you today is to ask you to comment. It doesn't have to be long or deep, but I would love to know who reads here and how you came to read here, if you don't know us. If you have a blog or a website of some kind, please leave us your address. I won't encourage you to leave e-mail addresses to post because of the spam issues.
